About this notice
This notice explains how Daystar University handles personal information on its websites: the main site, our schools, directorates, the library, conferences and the people directory.
The online application, student portal and e-learning sites are run separately and have their own notices.
What we collect
Just visiting. Our servers keep technical records such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, so that we can run the site, keep it secure and fix faults.
When you send us something. If you use a contact or enquiry form, subscribe to updates, ask the library a question, submit a profile or research report, or register for a conference, we keep what you enter so that we can respond and provide the service you asked for.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use advertising or tracking tools on these sites.
Cookies and similar storage
We set only the cookies the site needs to work. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
| Name | Purpose | How long |
|---|---|---|
daystar-university-session |
Keeps your session working, including signing in as a conference delegate. | Until you close your browser, or 120 minutes of inactivity. |
XSRF-TOKEN |
Protects forms from being submitted by other sites. | Same as the session. |
daya_conversation |
Only if you use DAYA: lets your conversation follow you between Daystar websites. | One year, or until you choose Clear chat. |
daystar.cookie-notice, daya.open |
Browser storage that remembers you dismissed the cookie notice and whether the DAYA panel was open. | Until you clear your browser data. |
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings. The site may then not work properly, for example forms may refuse to submit.
Other services
Some pages show a YouTube video (using its privacy-enhanced mode) or a Google map. Those providers may set their own cookies when you play a video or load a map, under their own policies.
We use Cloudflare to deliver files and, for DAYA, to route requests to AI models. Links to other sites, such as the application portal, are covered by those sites' notices.
Your rights
Under the Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019, you may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how it is used. Write to us at the address below and tell us which site you used.
DAYA, our AI assistant
DAYA stands for Daystar Assistant for You, Always.
DAYA is an AI assistant on the Daystar University websites. It answers questions about programmes, admissions, schools and campus life from Daystar's public pages, and it can be wrong. Check the pages it links to.
What DAYA stores
When you use DAYA we store the messages you type, the pages it used to answer, a hashed form of your IP address and your browser type. We also keep a cookie on your device so your conversation follows you between Daystar websites.
How long we keep it
Conversations are kept indefinitely so that we can evaluate and improve the assistant. They are not used to train a model today; we may use them for evaluation and for fine-tuning work in the future.
What Clear chat does
Clear chat removes the link between you and the conversation: the hashed address, the browser type and the cookie. The words you typed stay in the record exactly as you typed them. Please do not type names, ID numbers or contact details. DAYA never asks for them.
Who can read it
The Daystar web team can read conversations, including when you report an answer that was wrong.
What DAYA cannot see
DAYA does not have access to student, staff or applicant records. For your fees, results, timetable or application status, use the student portal or contact Admissions.
